Behind the Scenes with Director of Design, Peter Stoddard
We recently got a chance to go behind the scenes with our Director of Design, Peter Stoddard — he shares about his inspiration, creative process, and favorites from the spring line.
Spring 20 East Meets West is about fusion, pairing traditional Japanese art with western desert landscapes. Mixing primary colors with bright and natural, reflective colors. This is Brixton’s brightest spring collection yet, filled with stand-out styles that will cover any of your adventures.
I stay inspired by every aspect of my life. Hobbies, friends, travels, nature, books, you name it.
I feel if you keep an open mind and pay attention to the details around you, there’s tons of inspiration everywhere.
I got my start from my twin brother David, founder of Brixton. I always liked people who stood out in a stylish way…I was drawn to it. I think my brother saw that in me and asked me to help him, so I went for it. I never thought I’d work in fashion. I came from a blue collar background which I’m so grateful for because we continue to pull inspiration from it today.
In the 80s, my older brother Ted hung out with Mods, punkers, and new wave people.
I’d see one of his friends with Creeper shoes, a Smiths shirt, and tight pants with a hair flop and was in awe and thought he was the coolest. He stood out from everyone else. I was hooked after that. I wanted to know more of why they stood out.
Well, when designing a new season, I usually have an idea or a direction of something that has inspired me, and I start to build off that. I’ll dive deep into it, even down to the music of that time period and the art and photography.
I like to bring all the designers together in one room and design seasons. The woven designer, knit designer, headwear designer sharing ideas. I believe each designer can offer something great, even if it’s not their category. It also gets us on the same path.
I’d say the Parsons workwear button woven shirt. I grew up wearing those on and off of work.
The Plaid Toil II Shorts remind me of when I’d go thrift store shopping as a kid and go buy the grandpa pants. I’d cut them into shorts and wear them with my favorite band t-shirt (The Cramps).
Cruze S/S button up woven shirt. Classic 50s silhouette with vertical stripes. It’s just stylish and cool.
